The band started when Paul Gilbertson (guitarist - never featured on any releases of james'), Gavan Whelan and Larry Gott spotted Tim Booth dancing at Manchester University. They asked him if he would like to dance for their band, Model Team International (so named because on of the members' girlfriends worked for a model agency of the same name, and that was what was written of the free t-shirts they gave out!). Tim said yes, and was later promoted to singer, where he re-named the band "james" after his inspiration, author James Joyce.
Jimone, or Jim 1?
Jimone was james' first EP. It can either be pronounced "Jimone (jim-own)" or "Jim one (jim-1)". The cover just bears the word "Jimone". Factory records had a history of producing stunning record covers. But "james" said to them: "No, it's alright, we'll make it!" Time went on, and it didn't get done. With one day to go, they suddenly remembered about the cover. Gavan got out his felt-tipped pens and quickly made a cover with large bubble writing. He couldn't fit the two words "jim" and "one" on the same line, but there was no more room, so the words joined together to fit. Hence: jimone Reminds you of the joke Plan ahead, doesn't it?
